Doors and window companies are potentially missing out on huge amounts of traffic to their websites by isolating a large sector of the market, due to different usage of terminology. Almost two-thirds of consumers searching for bi-fold doors online are unaware of the product’s true name, leading to over 34,000 fruitless searches for the product every month.

We surveyed 500 people and asked them to tell us what type of door this is in the picture below.

The industry term for the doors is ‘bi-fold’, but only 36% of consumers surveyed chose this answer. Other terms consumers used to describe the doors included folding track doors, concertina doors, zig zag doors, accordion doors and sliding doors.

What Do Your Customers Call a Bi-Fold Door?

If we take a closer look at what consumers call bi-fold doors, it’s clear that the folding mechanism is the main identifier.

36% - BI-FOLD DOOR

The dictionary definition of bi-fold is ‘designed to fold twice’. This is the most common industry term for the doors.

19% - FOLDING TRACK DOOR

The doors run along a track and trolley system, when they fold, unfold and slide.

14% - CONCERTINA DOOR

An instrument that uses a bellows system to create music, the instrument expands and contracts in a zig zag motion.

14% - ZIG ZAG DOOR

The shape the doors create when folded back.

9% - SLIDING DOOR

Bi-fold doors do slide, but in the industry, sliding doors refers to doors that open by one large pane of glass sliding behind another.

8% - ACCORDION DOOR

As with concertinas, accordions expand and contract in a zig zag motion to create music.
